Music legend Dolly Parton's literacy project for children is facing a major setback in Missouri. The state is cutting funding for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Fiscal Year 2027, the Kansas City Star reported Friday. The program, which Parton created in 1995, mails free books to children younger than 6 to promote literacy. Missouri lawmakers slashed its share of funding for the program from $6 million to $2 million, a two-thirds reduction that state education officials say will force the program to stop accepting new enrollments as early as July 1. Missouri children already enrolled in the program will continue to receive books. The cuts come a year after Missouri became one of 11 states to provide full statewide funding for the program. Nearly half of Missouri children under 6 are registered for the program. According to Parton’s Dollywood Foundation, more than 300 million books have been distributed worldwide, and about 1 in 6 U.S. children younger than 5 have received books through the program. #dollyparton #reading #books #kids #missouri
