40 years ago today, on April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl disaster began during a late night safety test at Reactor No. 4. A combination of design flaws in the RBMK reactor and human mistakes caused a sudden power surge. At 1:23 a.m., explosions blew the reactor apart, exposing its core and releasing massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. Firefighters and plant workers were the first to respond, not fully aware of the radiation danger. Many walked directly on radioactive debris while trying to stop the fire. Nearby Pripyat, home to nearly 30,000 people, continued normal life for hours. The evacuation didn’t begin until about 36 hours later, and most residents believed they would return home in a few days, but many never did. In the months that followed, more than 300,000 people were relocated from contaminated areas. Thousands of workers, later called “liquidators,” were sent to contain the damage, building a massive concrete shell around the destroyed reactor to limit further radiation leaks. The disaster led to long-term health effects, including increased thyroid cancer cases, especially among children exposed to radioactive iodine. The events were later brought to global attention through the series Chernobyl, which showed how small decisions, ignored warnings, and secrecy contributed to one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.
