The most horrible kind of people to deal with are the narcissists. SIGNS OF NARCISSISTIC BEHAVIOUR IN ISLAM: 1. THEY ALWAYS PRESENT THEMSELVES AS RIGHTEOUS Allah says: “Do not claim yourselves to be pure. He knows best who is truly righteous.” (Qur’an 53:32) 2. THEY REJECT CORRECTION AND LOOK DOWN UPON YOU The Prophet ﷺ defined arrogance as: “Rejecting the truth and despising people.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 91) This is kibr. It is not confidence. It is believing that admitting fault is beneath them. 3. THEY HUMILIATE AND BELITTLE YOU Allah prohibited ridicule, insults and offensive names. (Qur’an 49:11) A spouse who repeatedly mocks your appearance, intelligence, family or emotions is not “just joking.” They are violating your dignity. 4. THEY BLAME YOU FOR WHAT THEY DID Allah says: “Whoever commits a wrong and then blames it on an innocent person has burdened himself with slander and blatant sin.” (Qur’an 4:112) They hurt you, then accuse you of causing their behaviour. They betray you, then make your reaction the real problem. 5. THEIR WORDS IMPRESS OTHERS, BUT THEIR PRIVATE BEHAVIOUR IS DIFFERENT Allah describes a person whose speech sounds impressive, yet he becomes the fiercest opponent. (Qur’an 2:204) The Prophet ﷺ taught that a person’s true character is measured by how they treat their family: “The best of you are those who are best to their wives.” (Jāmiʿ al Tirmidhī 3895) 6. THEY TURN EVERY CONVERSATION INTO A FIGHT THEY MUST WIN The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most hated person before Allah is the most quarrelsome.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al Bukhārī 2457) 7. THEY LIE, BREAK PROMISES AND BETRAY TRUST The Prophet ﷺ identified these as characteristics of hypocrisy. (Ṣaḥīḥ al Bukhārī 33) One mistake does not make someone a narcissist. Look for a repeated pattern of arrogance, manipulation, blame shifting, humiliation and refusal to take responsibility. The clearest Islamic test is not how religious they appear in public. Islam does not use the exact word narcissist, but it exposes the behaviour. Because narcissist is a word given by modern psychology while Islam had exposed their patterns long ago.
