Penguin bars can no longer legally be called chocolate!! McVitie’s have cut the cocoa content so much that Penguin bars can no longer be described as chocolate biscuits as they contain more palm oil and shea oil than cocoa, so you will now see they are called ‘chocolate flavour’ on the packaging!! In the video you can see a photo of what their old ingredients used to be and it used to be real chocolate 🤦‍♀️ The same has happened for McVitie’s club bars but I couldn’t see the new packaging in the shop I was in! Quite ironic that their famous advertising slogan for years has been - “If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our Club” . They’ve now changed their slogan to - “If you like a lot of biscuit in your break, join our Club.” 🙈 McVitie’s changed the product formulations in response to the increase in cocoa prices as a tactic to maintain their margins. McVitie’s is owned by pladis, a global biscuit company which had an annual revenue of £3.23 billion in 2024 - a 17 per cent increase on the prior year - “driven by double-digit growth in international markets” as written on their website. So shouldn’t this multi-billion food pound company just absorb the increased cocoa costs in order to maintain product quality for their customers?? rather than swapping to cheaper ingredients! Of course not because it’s profit over people once again and they will do anything to maintain their margins and continued financial growth. To the detriment of the quality of their products. What do you think of this? I’d love to hear in the comments 👇 #profitoverpeople #ultraprocessedfoods #readlabels
