@famousobits: On April 26, 1989, Lucille Ball died in a hospital bed, eight days after surviving open-heart surgery. The operation had worked. A second aneurysm, in a completely different part of her aorta, is what killed her. Behind the camera, she was the first woman to run a major Hollywood studio. Her own board told her that greenlighting Star Trek and Mission: Impossible would bankrupt Desilu. She did it anyway, and sold the studio in 1967 for the equivalent of roughly two hundred million dollars today. She died on Carol Burnett’s birthday.
