@chronologee: Jonas Salk was the scientist who developed the first widely successful vaccine against Polio, one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century. During the 1940s and early 1950s, polio outbreaks caused paralysis and death, especially in children. Salk led research at the University of Pittsburgh to create an inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) using killed virus particles. In 1954, the vaccine underwent one of the largest medical field trials in history, involving over a million children in the United States. On April 12, 1955, the vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent. The announcement was celebrated nationally, and vaccination campaigns rapidly reduced polio cases. When asked who owned the patent, Salk famously replied: “Well, the people, I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?” He did not personally patent the vaccine, which contributed to its rapid public distribution. However: He did not become enormously wealthy from the vaccine, as he refused to patent it. He also faced funding challenges at times for research institutions and later scientific projects. Also, some later work did not receive the same level of support or acclaim as his vaccine breakthrough. Jonas Salk died in 1995 at age 80.
