No card was inserted. ⸻ The machine spoke. “Thank you.” A pause. Then… “Have a safe drive home.” I hadn’t driven there. I’d walked. The cashier slowly looked through the front windows. Parked directly outside… Was a car. Same color as mine. Same license plate. The driver’s seat was occupied. The person inside… Was staring directly at the store. They looked exactly like me.
