Dally raised the gun, and I thought: You blasted fool. They don’t know you’re only bluffing. And even as the policemen’s guns spit fire into the night I knew that was what Dally wanted. He was jerked half around by the impact of the bullets, then slowly crumpled with a look of grim triumph on his face. He was dead before he hit the ground. But I knew that was what he wanted, even as the lot echoed with the cracks of shots, even as I begged silently, Please, not him . . . not him and Johnny both. I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted. Dally hit the ground hard, and for a second the world went quiet. The echo of the shots still rang in my ears, but it was like my brain had shut down, like it refused to believe what my eyes were seeing. I wanted to run to him, shake him, yell at him for being such a fool, but my legs wouldn’t move. All I could do was stand there, frozen, watching the smoke rise from the policemen’s guns and Dally lying still in the street.
It felt wrong. Dally wasn’t supposed to go out like this. He was too tough, too alive, the kind of guy who could fight his way out of anything. And yet there he was, lying crumpled like a rag doll, and I knew he wasn’t getting up. Not this time. The lot, our place, the one spot where we could forget the world for a while, was now stained with something I couldn’t wash away.
I wanted to scream that he wasn’t just some hood, that he wasn’t just another body for the cops to mow down. He was ours…he was Dally. But the words stuck in my throat. The others were silent too, staring in disbelief, their faces pale in the glow of the streetlights.
Inside me, something cracked. Johnny was gone. Now Dally. And I wondered, as I stood there shaking, if any of us had a chance. If this was all we were meant for fists, fights, running, and dying too young. “Dally didn't die a hero. He died violent and young and desperate, just like we all knew he'd die someday. Just like Tim Shepard and Curly Shepard and the Brumly boys and the other guys we knew would die someday. But Johnny was right. He died gallant."
