A judge in Ohio today told a woman whose son was murdered that the killer’s prosecution is not meant to be “fair.” “Nothing in this process is fair. There's no sense of fairness. You'll never walk out of this court with feeling like you won or got anything back,” said Judge Steven Gall, who presides in the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court in Cleveland. Gall was speaking to Latisa Perryman, whose 20-year-old son, Jarvis Perryman, was shot to death in a Cleveland park on July 3, 2025. Her 17-year-old nephew also was seriously injured. Christopher W. Manning, 25, pleaded guilty on June 16 to involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault and attempted murder. Perryman asked Judge Gall today (Thursday, June 25), “When you state 25 to 32 that means it's no life sentence to that?” “So that’s correct. There’s no life tail,” Gall said. “That’s not what I agreed to with Mr. Jeffrey,” Perryman said, referring to prosecutor Jeffrey Schnatter, an assistant district attorney in Cuyahoga County. “I told him it had to be a life in there, because that's — my son's life is gone. Why would we do 25 to 32? How is that fair?” Perryman said. That’s when Gall told her “nothing in this process is fair.” Perryman said Manning “still needs to pay for what he did.

Why would we do 25 to 32? How is that fair?” Perryman said. That’s when Gall told her “nothing in this process is fair.” Perryman said Manning “still needs to pay for what he did." "Period. Point blank. He should not be able to be out here free, walking around, enjoying anything in life. My son was 20 years old. He didn't even get to enjoy his full 20 years,” Perryman said. The judge went on to sentence Manning to 32 to 37 years in prison. Michael C. O’Malley, the top elected prosecutor in Cuyahoga County, said in a press release that Manning “chose violence over reason, and he will now spend decades in prison because of that choice.” “I commend the Cleveland Metroparks Police Department for their relentless investigation and swift apprehension of Manning, which ensured he was brought to justice,” O’Malley said. According to the press release, the victims and friends "were walking in Euclid Beach Park in Cleveland when they were approached by Christopher Manning." "Manning began accosting the victims and arguing with them. Manning then retrieved a gun from his backpack and fired multiple times at the two victims. Both victims were struck, and Manning fled the scene." #law #court #crime
