Sigil magic is often attributed to Austin Osman Spare, an English artist who developed an idiosyncratic system of magic during the first half of the 20th century. Their use was popularized at least in part by Peter J. Carroll in “Liber Null & Psychonaut” after which they became widespread among chaos magicians. Personally, I was first introduced to sigil magic by Grant Morrisson’s infamous DisinfoCon lecture.
