This is false. I tried to negotiate a higher salary encourageing the company to keep the sign on bonus. I was instructed that it was non-negotiable.

If they want to play that game, and what to pay you lower than average then take the bonus, wait the 6 months to a year required to keep the bonus. Get experience then apply elsewhere.
