It was praised as a landmark feminist work, and criticized by some Black intellectuals for its portrayal of Black men. It has been banned, challenged, taught in classrooms, adapted into a Steven Spielberg film, a Broadway musical with multiple Tony Awards, and a second film in 2023. Walker herself became a public figure well beyond literature, speaking on civil rights, women's rights, and the lives of Black women in the American South. Her essay collections introduced the term "womanist," which she defined as something broader than white feminism. More than four decades after the Pulitzer, the book is still on school curricula and still banned in others. That tension is part of its life.
