SHE WAS STANDING AT THE ALTAR WHEN A STRANGER TEXTED HER: “DON’T MARRY HIM. ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED IN ROOM 306.” On the morning of her wedding, 32-year-old Kendra received a message from an unknown number. She ignored it. She was getting married in a beautiful hotel in Manchester, surrounded by family and friends. Her fiancé, Richard, was everything she had prayed for. He had a good job, treated her well and adored her five-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. At least, that was what she believed. Ten minutes before the ceremony, another message arrived. “Room 306. Ask him what happened to the woman who stayed there in March.” Kendra’s heart began racing. March was when Richard had travelled to London for a work conference. She remembered because he’d missed her daughter’s birthday. When she asked him about the message, he laughed. “Someone is trying to ruin our wedding.” She wanted to believe him. The ceremony began. Richard stood at the altar, smiling at her. The registrar asked whether anyone knew of a lawful reason why they should not marry. Kendra looked at Richard. Then she remembered the message. She took out her phone. A third message appeared. This time, it contained a photograph. Richard was standing outside a hotel room. Beside him was a woman holding a baby. Kendra recognised the woman. It was Richard’s former fiancée, whom he’d claimed had moved to Australia. Kendra stepped away from the altar. “Who is she?” Richard’s smile disappeared. He asked her to lower her voice. She refused. “Who is the woman in this photograph?” The guests began whispering. Richard finally admitted the woman was his ex-fiancée. But he insisted the baby wasn’t his. Then Kendra’s mother stood up. She had been unusually quiet throughout the wedding. She walked towards the altar and looked directly at Richard. “Tell her the truth.” Richard went pale. Kendra turned to her mother. “What truth?” Her mother began crying. “Your daughter has already met her.” Kendra looked towards the reception hall. Her little girl was sitting with Richard’s sister. Then the child suddenly ran towards them. She held up a photograph. “Mummy, Daddy gave me this.” It was a photograph of the same baby. On the back, Richard had written: “My first daughter. One day, she’ll meet her sister.” Kendra stared at him. Then her daughter asked the question that silenced the entire room. “Mummy, why did Daddy tell me my real daddy was dead?” Kendra had never told her daughter that. Because her biological father wasn’t dead. He was standing at the back of the church. And he’d just arrived with the police. WOULD YOU HAVE CANCELLED THE WEDDING BEFORE HE EXPLAINED HIMSELF? #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #storytelling #storywriting #storyteller #stories
