It is 2026, and yet in Pakistan, we are still having conversations that should have ended decades ago. A woman lost her life because she refused intimacy. Let that sink in. She said no, and for that, she was killed. The most disturbing part is not just the crime itself. It is the mindset behind it. In Pakistan, many people still struggle to understand a simple concept: consent. Marriage is not ownership. A wife is not property. A woman does not stop being a human being the moment she gets married. For far too long, women in Pakistan have been told that their purpose is to sacrifice, to stay silent, to give up their comfort, their dreams, and sometimes even their safety for the sake of keeping a marriage intact. When they ask for basic rights, they are accused of following “Western propaganda.” When they ask for dignity, they are called rebellious. When they ask to be treated as equals, they are told to compromise. The reality is that women are not asking for special treatment. They are asking to be recognized as human beings. Human beings with feelings, boundaries, choices, and the right to say no. Pakistan cannot move forward while half of its population is still fighting to be seen as fully human. Pakistan cannot progress while violence against women continues to be excused, justified, or ignored. Pakistan cannot claim to value family while women live in fear inside their own homes. A society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable. Today, Pakistan must ask itself a difficult question: Why is a woman’s “no” still so hard for some people to accept? Until consent is understood, until women are treated with dignity, and until justice is truly served, Pakistan will continue to fail the women who deserve so much better.
