And contrapoints has always done that. Reducing subsects down to funny characterizations made her go viral, and I loved those videos. But i think she is stuck in that world: where people don't change or grow, and where current events don't affect public consciousness. She's certainly an expert on 2014 online discourse.

I think the enlightenment question was stupid but I feel like the critique you're making about Contrapoints's empirical blind spot regarding the leftists who are unconcerned with political victory is actually pretty narrow - you can see those people every day on social media it's just that Contrapoints overestimates their size, but I didn't get the impression that this was a load-bearing assumption in a greater political manifesto

I don’t necessarily see the harm in having non-experts discuss political issues - i feel the obsession with authority can sometimes stifle discourse and leave us with takes from a handful of phds and a million joe rogans; intellectuals tend to be more self-conscious about appearing “ignorant” - although 3h20 does seem excessive… i think wynn is dead-on in describing the motivations of some of her detractors and the general vibe on twitter, but agree they are probably not a fair representation of “the left” more broadly

I mean, I think there’s truth to what she’s saying. I’m sorry but that online marginal minority is what defined the impression the left. As someone who lives with people who describes themselves as ”not being too political“, that’s just the image they have of people on the left. They may be a minority but they define the conversation. You claim that it’s about holding the leaders fit to the fire but when all the algorithm rewards and shows is people doing this, it can reflect an image more of a movement cannibalizing itself than actual showing anything appealing for the average person. And I think denying that is a massive issue that’s equivalent to burying your head in the sand.

the other issue I have with this critique is that you have this issue with them taking a multi-disciplinary and multi-role approach. but this is well within the broad left tradition. marx & engels, chomsky, lenin, mao, zizek all synthesize a myriad of disciplines and influences to reach a number of conclusions about the world. you could argue this was done more poorly, but you never actually say that. indeed, you don't really take issue with any of the claims other than calling them cynical

“expressing frustration for being an internet celeb” has kind of been Wynn’s most well known characteristic since 2018 when she reacted poorly to social media feedback on a video. as a viewer who appreciates much of her content i have found that canon event to be the source of both her view of the left, the internet, and the trans community and those same communities’ views of her. it’s certainly walled her off from everyone else and prevented her from having and kind of ongoing conversation with the rest of these communities—which is how you end up flattening everyone else into caricatures.
