I’m a big supporter of disclose needs and relevant symptoms not diagnosis. People in the workplace are extremely uninformed about these types of conditions, but they have very deep biases and preconceived notions that they have not and likely will not work through. Their biases and misinformed beliefs will impact how they see you if you reveal specific diagnosis to them. It is safer just to let them know what you need and have doctors paperwork verifying you have a condition that qualifies, and even the paperwork from your doctor does not have to have a specific diagnosis and if your doctor gives it to you with a specific diagnosis or redact it before you submit it, you are not required to give your medical diagnosis to your job

with collegues, i test the waters first by describing it as a genetic condition that impacts chemical production in the brain and leads to [insert lowballed adhd symptoms here] - i usually go with concentration issues, sleep disturbances, sensory issues - that impact my work performance (so when i'm late cause i couldn't get out of bed/overslept/whatever adhd bs my brain pulled that day, they have context as to why that happened). if they react positively to that, i don't mind "revealing" that it's adhd but i found out it's best not to label it as a "mental health thing" from the start

So far in my experience they'll preach positivity and support but it's surface level.

spoke with my boss in an annual review last week. he pointed out that I'm taking longer on certain tasks than I should be. I told him I've ADHD (only diagnosed last year), and tbh, it's better for us both if he gives me a deadline for when he needs or wants something done. nothing open ended. also, if he says COB/COP Tuesday, I guarantee he'll have it in his inbox for Wednesday morning. he was struggling with bringing it up or describing the problem, I'd to laugh and say it's a part of "time blindness" and underestimating how quick I'll get something done, then failing and I've been living with it in work for 20 years but only had the words for it in the last few months. I'm lucky that honesty doesn't harm me in my role - nice boss and don't work in the US. 😅
