@ashleystriblet: I think as more tech savvy folks consider alternatives to get AI at a cheaper cost, I’ll be watching to see if that has any impact on the everyday consumer. One one hand it might require too much tech knowledge for some, but the potential benefits around control and privacy might appeal to certain pockets of the market. #futureofai

I think people will have their own models when they want their data to be proprietary. Maybe creatives, maybe small fintech that has the resources to keep it secure. But I don’t think it’s gonna be the ones that are hesitant to adopt, as it seems more daunting to own your own.

Yes! The challenge is hardware. There are tiny models out there but most people want modest size models that require $3k ~ $50k to run. It's more expensive than a gaming PC - more like car prices!

I have a few open source models. The paid stuff is of course “better” but it’s nice to have the option and I’m very much hoping we see additional efficiency gains where we can get better performance out of the 30 - 70 billion parameters models. Currently, they run slow on regular hardware.

All going to be hybrid. Everyone will self host one or more smaller models that call out to larger models both directly and via intermediary agents/products from 3rd parties.

I am becoming convinced that frontier labs will start charging per token only and abandon subscriptions, as they can’t make enough money unless they change their business model. For that and other reasons I actually just started working to migrate to open weight models and even on-device models on my MacBook Pro. I have to say I’m surprised by how capable they are now compared to when I last looked.

I’ve played around with this idea as smaller scale, non extractive data centers that function as learning labs and civic spaces. Solar punk vibes. I think this could be the path.

Guys, if you’re a gamer head or have a graphics card, then you are able to self host and it works “better” (different but eh you get it).
