UPDATE: This morning, we published the names of government officials who were listed as beneficiaries of honorarium payments from money paid to the State by British Petroleum (BP) in 2021. One of the people on the list was former State Counsel Abdul Aziz Saho. He called us from the United States to clarify that he has never received any money from the BP funds. When informed that his name appeared on the list of beneficiaries who reportedly received D300,000, Aziz responded: “Maybe someone took the money, not me.” He explained that in 2021, while he was out of the country, a colleague, Muhammed Sowe, called him and informed him that a cheque for D50,000 had been issued in his name. He said he was surprised and could not understand why such a payment had been allocated to him. Aziz was one of the State lawyers who provided legal advice before the Government signed the contract with BP, but he said he was not involved in the BP exit agreement. According to Aziz, the cheque was later cancelled, and he never received any payment. He said he was therefore shocked to see his name published by The Grand Bantaba this morning as a recipient of D300,000 from the BP funds. Below is the full list of beneficiaries. If your name is on the list and you did not receive any money, please contact us.
