I was once told that a task is one thing. If something requires multiple parts, it is a project. Your mental list has 5 things. Her list is 5 projects each with multiple subtasks and some pre-requisites. She is also probably trying to get all of these things done at once. She doesn’t need a mental list, or a little paper list on a Post-it, she needs project management software.

Don’t make a list make a web and connect each task that relies on another task.

Yes! But also not only do I have to sit and prioritize my list by urgency, I also have to figure out the best order to get them all done. ‘Cause laundry might not be a top priority, but it’s a ‘start it and walk away and get something else done’ task so it should be one of the first. Same with the dishwasher! But I have to shower first ‘cause I need hot water before the washer and dishwasher use it all up. But first i need to eat breakfast before I shower so I don’t pass out but if I don’t have any dishes to eat on then I need to run the dishwasher. 😳 So what’s my first task again? Idk, I’m just not gonna do any of it. It’s too complicated. 😅

AuDHDer here, I have a binder with all of my routines (daily routines, and very detailed daily/weekly/seasonal housekeeping routines). Recently started vyvanse and now also use a bullet journal for daily stuff. I used AI to help me figure out how to combine the 2 into a system that I can actually *hopefully* manage long term. I'm about 8 wks in, which is about 5 wks longer than I'd usually make it.

If I have a lot to do, tons of competing deadlines, or have a limited time to complete as much as possible, I have a method that I call "brain dumping" or "brain downloading." I have suggested to other AuDHD colleagues who later said it stresses them out, but I can't do anything without it lol. I write everything down in a long list of tasks no matter how small. If a thought comes to me while I'm writing this list or while I'm in the middle of a task, it gets added to the list. If I think something while I'm doing something else then that thought will never actually encode into my memory and it just *poofs* out of existence. My lists usually turn into a massive mess of doctor-like handwriting, codewords, tasks, thoughts, follow-up prompts, etc. with lines and words scratched out, doodles, dates, and usually at least one coffee stain. I just have a notebook of these massive amorphous "lists" that all kinda run in together or flow into multiple pages, but somehow this is exactly what keeps my brain on track 🤣

I'm neurodivergent & make lots of lists. but i spend energy making those lists then my body says the tasks are completely because we made the list & now it's back in energy conservation mode which makes the tasks more difficult to get through

I make lists of the lists I need to make 📝 also, there is no end to the “to do” list. I TRY to write a daily “to do” list from the big list for each day but I get so confused trying to pick and prioritise tasks but I’ve got to write them in the order I’m going to do them (I don’t make the rules 🤷🏼‍♀️). I get tied in knots trying to think of the most efficient way to do things and prioritise them according to need, I end up frozen in place with my brain in a melted state 🤯 then I can’t talk, like physically can’t talk. I lost the ability to open my mouth to say words. I will not move/eat/drink/go to the toilet until one of those needs become more unbearable than the feeling of the need to be frozen. The need to be quiet and not talk can last for days after that 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m autistic, my fiance is adhd. We live by ToDo Lists. Every daily thing goes on that dang list just so I can have the satisfaction of crossing it off. If we don’t have lists, nothing would get done 😅

Most clear example for me of this is planning to clean my room and then piling everything onto the floor to go through but then at the end of the day I never finished because it’s impossible to do everything at once and I was too tired, so the mess was there for a week before I started over 🤣

oooh I make lists. then im exhausted from making the list. and the list sits there for a bit before ending up the garbage...but not before it fist stares at me at makes my anxiety spike and makes me evaluate how little I've done, how much I should have done, how much will be waiting after....😳😳😳😳

I love the little bit of dopamine from checking something off a list. That list will absolutely be long and poorly prioritized though haha

Autistic with ADHD here, I make a list just to brake down a single task, so that I can prioritize the most important steps.

I love making "to do" lists . . . it takes me hours. There are drafts. The final product is prioritized and there are sub items on almost every "to do" listed and the list is several pages long. It's also either typed or been re-written several times so it looks nice and neat (for who's benefit 🤷🏻‍♀️). I spend so much time and energy making the "to do" list that I have no more time or energy to actually accomplish anything ON the "to do" list.

I like to tell myself it’s a quest. Because I love to side quest, so it’s a way for me to stay “on task” with the most important things.
