Rod is used as a metaphor. Like a staff of a Shepard to guide the sheep in the right direction.

I also take the statement about the rod and staff to mean like a tomato plant. It needs structure. Something to help support. It doesn’t punish the plant it provides guidance. If it gets out of line it just gets readjusted to the correct path.

This is why good exegesis is SOOOO important. Bad exegesis of scripture can be dangerous and impact generations. Jesus is the shepherd, we are the sheep. His rod/staff guides us, contains us in his flock, brings us back in gently but firmly with the crook of the staff if we go astray. Look at what the actual shepherds of that time might have understood it to mean (or people familiar with the job of shepherd). Understanding context, what type of literature in the Bible you’re reading (history, narrative, poetry, songs, etc), how the audience at the time would have understood it (not just through our modern lens), etc is so crucial. Not an expert at this at all but yeah.

Spare the rod means…spare the authority. It’s not an actual rod.

Exactly ROD meaning correcting rod is meant to direct and correct

The bible says “whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.”- Proverbs 13:24

Another problem associated with this is that many people can’t differentiate between discipline and punishment.

@.: This has sit in my spirit and I have wrestled with this. I have kept my lips shut when this has been “taught” in churches or Bible studies. Feeling like I was the minority or that I was misunderstanding. Thank you for explaining why this has been a struggle for me. Thank God I stopped using this form of disciple when I starting fostering. My kids were 2 and 3 so they missed out on much of this type of punishment and I couldn’t be more thankful.

He's referencing Proverbs 13:24 but that's NOT what it says 😂 it's referencing discipline being a loving action.

Proverbs 13:24: “those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.” This does not mean beat them with a rod, people! The rod is how shepherds GENTLY guide their sheep in a different direction. Discipline is giving them guidance not whacking them! Discipline is structure. Correction. Structure. Imagine a shepherd swinging his rod around his sheep they’d freak out and scatter in fear. He gently redirects them and they follow calmly.

Hallelujah’s!!!!! In the heavens are the earth!!! Jesus constantly disciple, and disciplined his disciples with correction, comfort, love, and shepherding of their hearts never did he strike any of the disciples in which he was training up and walking alongside with him to show them the way!!!!
