@greenpromiseintl: It is not the most glamorous job in the ocean… but it is one of the most important. You are watching the reef breathe. The giant sea cucumber Thelenota anax moves slowly across the seabed, ingesting sand mixed with organic matter. What follows is not waste, but transformation. Through this feeding process, sediments are continuously reworked and released, a function known as bioturbation. This constant turnover helps oxygenate the seabed, redistribute nutrients, and maintain the biological balance of reef ecosystems. What appears at first as simple movement across sand is actually part of a larger system of recycling that keeps coral reef environments functional and alive. Reefs do not rely only on what is visible above them. Much of their stability depends on these quiet, often overlooked processes happening at the sediment level. Not glamorous. But essential.
