This is funny because Steve Jobs was a professional manager. He didn’t know how to code, etc. But he was great about working towards a vision and putting the right people in the right places.

The problem is those individual contributors are never taught how to properly lead. Just because you can do the job at a high level doesn’t necessarily mean you can coach someone else to. Leading is like being a parent, everyone has the ability, but not everyone should.

In my first company we had the opposite problem, they were very good technical people but the could not manage people of their life dependent on it

This philosophy has led to shit management across corporate america, just like the philosophy Jobs is complaining about did before it. To be a great manager, you must balance both. The best managers are not pure managers and they are also not the great ICs.

Worst thing about being a manager is not being able to do what you’re great at but trusting your team to do it. They won’t necessarily do it as well, but they can get it done and surprise you now and then.
