I've watched so many interviews Frank DeAngelis. I feel like he was truly meant to be the principal of that school. I still remember that day. My heart goes out to everyone that went through it, as well as the many that were/still are living with it.

Teacher here - I attended a workshop led by your principal, Frank DeAngelis, before my first year teaching (8 years ago). Still remember the speech about the key ring to this day and it still gives me chills! 💙 Thanks for sharing your story!

I was a child when Columbine happened, and I remember all of the changes that occurred from it. Now as a teacher, with a principal license, the lens I see it through is so different and more powerful. Principal DeAngelis really showed what true leadership was that day and in the years that followed.

I’m the same age as you and was also in 9th grade at the time, albeit in Canada. Many of the things you had in your backpack that day were what I carried in mine. Seeing one of those little pots of fruit flavoured lip balm we all had brought back a lot of memories. I remember watching CNN when I got home from school on April 20th 1999 and seeing kids the same age as me running for their lives. Something changed that day. Every year when it starts to feel like spring, I always think of Columbine. 💙

My kids are almost 6 and when they were in kindergarten their amazing school officer would apologize to me because even though he knew me he couldn’t let me go to my kids without this green laminated paper proving I was there for my kids. I was never once upset when I forgot it and had to go back to the car. I told him I’m so grateful that you take our kid’s safety so seriously. I love officer John and hope to see him in the fall.

Hi Cindy thanks for sharing!! Could you talk to us about the aftermath? How come you never touched your backpack again? What happened to the school year? How did the school help you cope?
