Until police officers have to pay out of their own pockets for their ignorance this won’t end. It doesn’t have to wipe them out financially, just make their personal life more uncomfortable. In a case like this a court should issue a $100,000 judgement and require it be paid personally by the officer not his agency or insurer. A separate larger amount should be paid by his agency for failure to properly train him.
