@kporter.stuff: Every engineer has gaps. The ones who grow fastest aren’t the ones with the fewest gaps, they’re the ones who have a system for finding and closing them deliberately. Capture every surprise, every decision you wouldn’t have made, every behavior you didn’t predict. Once a week, go thirty minutes deeper on one of them. Over a career, that habit compounds into something most engineers never build. Start this week. 🙌🏼⚙️
we all don't know what we don't know and that is why due diligence is important.

How do we close or at least reduce the gap between design and manufacturing. What i experienced was the manufacturing often struggles with the complexity of design (even though it has its function) but it can cause so many error to the parts we fabricated. We need to create a foolproof system (one of the solution we often practice) any other idea?

I do this in class, if a topic comes up and I don't know it, I write it down with the word review in my notes.

While not an engineer, I work in millwork design as a draftsman. You have described exactly the process I’ve been in the last 4 years. I learned quickly that just knowing the programs was only a beginning. Now how to build a door? Cabinetry? Builtins? Why do we use a 5/8” gap around the top of a jamb? Why do we engineer cores to face in solid wood? Why a 1/2” dowel for joinery? I did not even know the questions to ask in the first years. Curiosity is magic.

I realized this and I embraced closing the gaps instead of fearing "being seen" with at all. Every opportunity is a learning opportunity for me.

This is amazing. I’m a practicing structural engineer in the philippines in the past 2 years, and so far what I’ve observed is the more you think you know about something, the more things you don’t know about it. Having been able to be exposed on difficult projects, and had fast feedback and being able to research and verify everything through books is what made me exponentially grow. Having a great mentor is a must though.

Civil related: I suggest engineer works for a contractor for at least 2 if not 4 years mastering Surveying and Estimating. Then work for a consultants mastering designing. This will cover many if not most gaps. Only thing left is how good of a communicator you are. At that point you’re looking to be the engineering project manager which should be the end goal of your career.
