Large parts of England are facing growing pressure on water supplies after an exceptionally dry and hot start to summer. By July 21, England had received only around 3% of its long-term average rainfall for the month, while river flows and reservoir levels continued to fall. According to the Environment Agency, 84% of monitored river flows were classified as below normal or lower, while England’s reservoir storage had dropped to around 75.3%. 🚱 As a result, temporary water-use restrictions — commonly known as hosepipe bans — have expanded across several regions. By late July, almost 40% of England’s population was facing water-use restrictions. Areas supplied by Thames Water, Anglian Water, Affinity Water, Cambridge Water, Southern Water, South East Water and parts of South West Water have all been affected by temporary bans. But what exactly is a hosepipe ban? These restrictions are designed to reduce non-essential water consumption during periods of unusually high demand or limited supply. Depending on the specific rules in your area, they can restrict using a hosepipe to water gardens, wash cars, fill paddling or swimming pools and clean outdoor surfaces. 🔥 The situation follows repeated periods of unusually hot weather. On the hottest days, water demand has reportedly risen by as much as 30%, putting additional pressure on treatment works, reservoirs, rivers and groundwater supplies. The effects aren’t limited to household water use either. Prolonged dry conditions are affecting agriculture, with some crops being harvested early, concerns over reduced yields and livestock farmers already using winter forage reserves. Low river flows are also creating problems for ecosystems, including reports of distressed fish, algal blooms and deteriorating water quality in some areas. ⚠️ Important: Conditions and restrictions can vary significantly between individual water-company supply areas. This map is a simplified visualization of the wider water-stress situation and should not be used to determine whether a specific household is currently subject to restrictions. Always check your local water provider for the latest rules. 💬 Are there water restrictions where YOU live? Comment your town or county below. #UK #England #GreatBritain #HosepipeBan #WaterShortage
