I AGREE! And just to give you some context, I was earning less than £2k per month as a doctor. I’ve studied all my life while my siblings were out living life. I started doing content creation and my first pay out was £20k because of one video going viral and I earned that through commission. Content creation gave me a community, it gave me self worth & it gave me the balance of home and work life. I still have this guilt lingering wanting to go back to the nhs but I know working in the NHS for more than 8 years, I have to give up my comfortable lifestyle I have currently & be miserable doing the most rewarding job

I think about this a lot! I have a masters degree in chemistry which was SO hard, went down the corporate route but now I’m doing content creation because it’s so much more fun and way more opportunity to earn. I struggle a lot with the judgement/shame of not doing a ‘proper job’ and completely understand the frustration. On the other hand you also can’t diminish the skill it takes to create content either. Not everyone can do it and earn from it. Its just a different type of skill and dedication (I’ve been doing it for years and only just starting to earn from it) xx

A lot of content creators are actually health care professionals and they aren’t treating us (hugely valued 🙏🏼♥️) but the ARE educating us . If it was cheaper to go to your derm or dentist and ask a question people would do it more but instead they charge 200-500 gbp for a consultation .

I think you’re right! The thing is though 1. The public don’t select the wages healthcare professionals do and payments through views and engagement will naturally pay more bevause people are chronically online more than the average opening hours that professionals are. I’m so disappointed that even now. The government and those in charge of budgets don’t uplift the salaries

It's just the ability to reach so many more people with one unit of work. For us in healthcare, we are only treating one patient at a time. We get paid well, but ultimately content creators are in the wide net of the attention economy, and can 'do work' on many people simultaneously. They only need to grab and maintain our attention, which is more valuable than we realise. Also don't forget that the distribution of income and success in the content space is highly skewed pareto distribution. The number of people that can actually sustain a living from content creation is not actually very large. Most fail and never make it, but of course we never see it!

This is something I think about a lot as a GP who also creates content. The reach of a well made video can genuinely exceed what a consultation room ever could. But the trust gap is the real issue. People will watch a 60 second video and act on it before they’d follow advice from their own doctor. That’s not a content problem, it’s a healthcare relationship problem. And honestly it’s why clinicians need to be in this space 🔥

I feel like it’s more to do with capitalism. Corporations will spend and invest in marketing and yes that includes social media-I mean look at Coachella. It feels like where traditionally healthcare was viewed with some deference but the way the government and corporations have tried to shift that narrative if that makes sense.

I completely agree with you. I know it might sound harsh but there’s literally some content creators making loads of money through socials without any skills, talent or merit whatsoever. Meanwhile people who’ve had to dedicate years of education, training, learning and sacrifice are earning so little, seems very unjust to me. The only caveat for me personally is any content creator who is genuinely creating content which is having a real worldly beneficial impact e.g. someone raising awareness and educating on health for example.

I agree .I'm a theater nurse and all I get is online referring. and in some cases they are there because wrong advice leads to health issue. ie drink 6 liters plus a day .that is dangerous but some PT said it's ok😳

AND PEOPLE HAVE AUDACITY TO ASK WHY SOCIETY IS FAILING...now would it be motivating to study 10 years to be a doctor with mental health issues and just completely burned out with debts just for an og model or a footballer to earn more than you ever earn in your lifetime or even people from love island or streamer university? absolutely not and then we wonder why people drop out of school to go to love island or streamer university
