What NOT to say ❌ “I’m flexible” Sounds like you haven’t thought it through ❌ “ASAP” Sounds desperate, not prepared What to say instead (pick what applies): If you’re unemployed or between roles: “I can start from [DATE]. If it helps with onboarding, [ALTERNATE DATE] also works.” If you’re currently employed: “I’d need to give proper notice, so my earliest start date would be [DATE].” If you’ve got pre-booked time off: “My earliest start date is [DATE]. I do have time off booked on [DATES], but I’m happy to plan around it.” If you’re finishing something important: “I’m wrapping up a key piece of work by [DATE], so I’d be able to start fully focused from [NEXT DATE].” If you’re relocating: “I can start remotely from [DATE] and be onsite by [DATE] once the move’s complete.” Rule of thumb: Always give one clear date and one sensible option.
