@elly.psychologist: People-pleasing can feel impossible to break, especially if you’re used to putting others first to avoid conflict or discomfort. But it’s a pattern you can change with patience and kindness towards yourself. Start by giving yourself time before saying yes, check in with your own needs, and remember that other people’s feelings are not your burden. People-pleasing is learned, not fixed. Taking small, consistent steps helps you build confidence and self-trust, so you can honour your own needs without guilt. Change is possible, even if it feels tough at first #peoplepleasing peoplepleasing #peoplepleaser #peoplepleaserproblems #peoplepleasernomore #therapytok

Man, it is so good to hear someone say this out loud. Sometimes we really do just need to do one tiny thing differently each day. We can't change everything overnight and it's so easy to get discouraged when we catch ourselves reacting the same way we've reacted our whole lives. Hearing it framed this way makes it feel possible, like, okay I don't have to become a whole new person by Tuesday. I can just practice one small thing today.

Some years ago, I realised that I was saying yes to everything even if I didn’t want to do it, but when I realised, I switched to saying no to everything and now I find I can never commit to anything, and my gut reaction if anyone asks me to do something or invites somewhere, is no. How do I correct this?

The first honest "no" always feels like a betrayal — because "yes" was how you kept everyone comfortable for so long. It isn't. It's just you finally taking up the room you were always allowed.
