Seems like Every day, I learn about a new scam. Today’s scam comes in the form of something called a so called undetectable mileage stopper, which is exactly what it sounds like. This nasty little device literally goes into a car’s computer and prevents it from racking up mileage, or makes it record only a fraction of the mileage the car actually travels. So how do you flag one of these things, where are they most common, and what happens if someone gets caught using one? Here is where we run into the first problem. From what I found, they can be incredibly hard to detect. Some reports say that if you use a proper scan tool to check all of the car’s modules, you can compare them to see if things like the transmission and ECU show different mileage amounts. However, some mileage stoppers are incredibly thorough, making them nearly impossible to detect digitally. From there, you can check things like the software flash history or make sure metrics like engine hours line up with the vehicle’s mileage to see if anything looks suspicious. Beyond that, because some of these things seem to do their mischievous little job very well, you might just have to do a physical inspection and see if the condition of the vehicle actually lines up with its alleged mileage. You could even drive it to a location that is a known distance away and see if the mileage matches the drive. All in all, it still seems like a pretty sloppy situation that does not really have a defined solution yet. I feel like this is probably going to go in the direction of over-the-air mileage updates to verify everything, and honestly, I do not know if that is better or worse. It's just funny that it's 2026 and we still haven't completely figured out odometer rollbacks. That being said, people who choose to defraud others like this could be on the hook for up to three years in prison and potentially $10,000 or more in fines. If you are worried about stumbling across one of these things, reports seem to be more focused on vehicles that stand to lose massive value from higher mileage, like expensive cars or commercial vehicles that travel a ton of miles. Definitely something to keep an eye out for when purchasing a vehicle. I’m BigKleib34. Follow me for the hottest car news daily. #cars #odometer #scam #carsoftiktokcontest
