Remember: You can't just sandwich glass into wood, the wood can excert a lot of pressure on it. You need some kind of material which allows the wood to slide over the glass while also expand and contract. I would suggest first spraying/wiping the inside of the cut down with transparent epoxy 2-3 times, so there's no way it can "absorb" more epoxy, and add the glass and fill the gap with black epoxy, to make it look more seamless. However, I recommend adding a thin foil on top of the glass, so you can can slide it out afterwards and not bond it directly to the wood. Adding some silicone based oil to the glass surface aids this even more.

Ok, hear me out! Why not cut the wood in half or three pieces, lengthwise? This seems like an awful waste of wood. If you split it in half, the weight would NOT be 400 pounds, but a semi reasonable 200. You'd still have the thickness you need to add that odd piece of glass. Or even better, cut it into 3 even pieces, making the weight even more manageable, 133 pounds ish, and the tableS actually affordable to Joe Average? $1800.00 is the cost of that ONE PIECE of Walnut Burle (spelling?) plus all of that woodworking, time, and expertise, AND the (unnecessary IMO) piece of glass, makes this UNAFFORDABLE to the common person. But, split into 3, and JUST made into coffee tableS, (without the odd glass shelf, art is subjective) would make JUST the costs of materials and affordable $600 each? Just IMHO. Beautiful piece btw.

Beautiful table but if I'm being honest, I'm not sure the glass sticking out of the side adds much. If it were my table I'd prefer it without.
