@sincerelyjennifergrace: Developing intellectual taste is a lot like developing taste in anything else: you don’t start with certainty in your choices, you have to start with exposure. #intellectual #lifelonglearning #humanities #interesting #study
“You don’t start with complete certainty in your choices, you instead have to start with exposure. Taste does not require mastery of every topic or art form, but it does require attention to guide yourself out your comfort zone. To develop your personal taste, you need to experience contrast (and just as importantly your taste will be built through reflections). Overtime, you’ll stop relying on algorithms or consensus and start developing your own sense of goodness & beauty; as well as your own standard for what is interesting, proactive, & boundary pushing (all of which I think is the goal).”

Would love to add about art. It is absolutely alright to not understand and not know all the details and secrets of the art. Just look at it. Go to different museums and galleries to get first hand experience. Look at it like a pretty pictures. It will be enough. Just take in the colours and composition, size. Maybe read one or two backstories. Don’t force all that tons of information on yourself. And repeat the process over and over again. Then, one day you will walk into a museum, have a glance and think: “Yes, this is early works of the X, she/he was exploring work with colors before finding right direction. It is a scene from Iliad and so on”. But before that magic happens. Please, enjoy the Art!

Totally agree as someone who has been on the tiktok book community (or BookTok) for almost 3 years now. I don’t pay attention to my own algorithm that much anymore as I’ve learned, over the years, what books or authors fits in my own universe and what doesn’t. Not only in one genre but in almost every each one. I love being eclectic myself, for the matter. Homogeneity (staying only in one genre or only read deep/thought provoking books) was never meant for me 😂

The cheat code is to find a show that is very well respected, and then pair a piece of art with the discussion on it. You'll learn how to discuss the piece in an intellectual way.

Yes, i had a good friend who knew wine. At the start of our friendship we talked about educating the palette in order to name and categorise the different tastes of a good wine. I compared this to painting in a like-for-like way but the comparison was rejected. Wine was obviously more sophisticated than art. After a few months of me talking about art and my friend talking a out wine he admitted art was just the same. The subtle variations of wines were every bit as sophisticated as those of painting.
