According to Pfeiffer, DeVito rarely broke character while playing the Penguin. Hidden beneath heavy prosthetics and makeup for much of the shoot, he would often stay off by himself between takes, making him seem almost as unsettling as the character he was portraying. Pfeiffer jokes that she never wanted to talk to him while he was in costume, describing him as sweaty, grunting in the corner, and completely transformed by the makeup team. Because both actors spent so long getting into character each day, she says she rarely even saw DeVito out of costume and never really got the chance to get to know him during filming.
