As someone who has done this, keep in mind hard drive space. With 1k movies, in 720p, and 33 tv shows, 8T went FAST! And an 8T hard drive now sells for over $250 thanks to AI! I originally bought it for $130. So, if you’re about to get into this, I feel for you. It’s not going to be cheap up front, but you’ll save a lot of money in the long run. My home server cost me about $300 to get started. I was paying $130 a month for my streaming services, so the server has paid for itself multiple times over in the two years I’ve had it.

FYI - MakeMKV is not free. It gives you a trial, but at a point you will need to spend $60 to a lifetime subscription.

I’ve been downloading all of my dvds with MakeMKV and storing them on an external hd, but also using Handbrake to compress the files so they don’t take up as much space and converts them to an mp4. I haven’t gotten to the plex/jellyfin server yet though 😅

I actually go one more step to use handbrake to condense the size. you will lose some of the quality, but it saves on size. also, you will need to have an external hard drive if you have a decent size of movies.
