And before that Taiwan movies were great. Hong Kong movie industry became a factory and churn out more versions around the certain repetitive themes. The quality of these films were way down before Chinese market became important for censorship for China market kicks in.

There were lot of governments censorship on movies in China, South Korea etc before 1990. HK was now not the only place that makes entertaining movies. HK no longer have the resources or budget to compete.🤔
