It’s because so many people chase titles and roles and think thats a natural reflection of the pay. The smart way to play this is to take the role with a great title that’s easily applicable in other roles (director, VP, etc) even if the pay isn’t great. Work there for a few months and then apply to other places with large titles and more pay that you might not be fully qualified for. Chalk it up to poor alignment if they ask why you want to leave. The next role will see your title and make an assumption about your pay. You don’t have to say anything about how much you’re making.

Another tactic is changing job titles of common roles that are standard in the industry to something completely made up to make it difficult to get salary comparisons to figure out what a competitive market salary is for that position. It’s more common for more entry level or low-level experience jobs because obviously if you are more experienced in that industry you will know what the real title is but sometimes you will still even see it for more senior roles. I worked for a company years ago that did this in my industry of property and asset management, they changed leasing agent to property consultant (like what? That doesn’t even make sense) and property administrator to client connections advisor.

We had two people quit in my company so when we asked how long it would take to replace them (stuff was falling apart) they let us know they were going to combine both jobs and have ONE person do it… the title? (Logistics specialist) not better pay definitely not a better position just more work for one person
