For those looking for an answer: for humans look up conditional determinism! Basically the neighbour cells “talk” via molecular signaling. Other species can have autonomous determination (asymmetry by segregation of cytoplasmic determinants) and more. Super interesting!

gradients. the answer is chemical gradients . starting to the 1 cell embryo, some chemicals concentrate in a gradient inside the cell in the opposite direction to one other. That's the reason for differentiating destinies in the future cells of the embryo. Then every cell communicates with the neighbours and they recognise the kind of tissue they are building. And so on and on. Developmental biology is a nightmare to study and a pleasure to know and understand.

I bet many others already commented this in greater detail but it is "decided" at the moment of sperm "entry". The entry point helps orient the zygote. This also involves diffusion, usually patterning proteins like hedgehog family proteins, that spread out and assign a dorsal and ventral. And then you know, one thing leads to another. Pretty sure I learned this in undergrad

That’s what life is. Stationary state fighting against the natural entropy using a lot of energy. The moment energy is gone to power biological processes, stationary state finishes and entropy takes over and that’s death

I know that the first thing that happens is the sphere has a dimple that eventually goes all the way through and turns into a cylinder (aka butt and mouth) then grows from there. Im not sure past that 😂

a cell is not totally semetrical, concentrations of certain molecule are different teoigout the cell. when it devudes both doughter cell will have slight different chemical gradiants, this will lead to formation of different tissues and a up/down/front/back

I feel like our physical bodies cells have a preconceived structure based on the shape of the chemicals.
Just like crystalline chemical structures. A Diamond structure can't be made to grow into an Opal.

Alan Turing wrote a paper on this - differential equations for diffusion through cell walls can explain the formation of patterns.
