Absolutely not true, you can reach 90% of your capacity to build muscle by maintaining or even in a minor caloric deficit !

Building muscle has nothing to do with your calorie intake, if you can put on muscle while maintaining/ being in a deficit theres no reason to be in a surplus, all you have to do is to eat enough protein, give your muscles a reason to grow (resistance training & progressive overload in the gym) , and eat enough carbs to support recovery and to have enough energy to lift (and to progressive overload over time). You can be in a small surplus (50-200 cals), but just know that over time you WILL gain some unnecessary fat and eventually you will have to cut.

Food isn’t stimulus. Mechanical tension is the stimulus for hypertrophy. You can eat in a surplus and not hit weights and get fat. If you eat in a surplus and hit weights you are not putting on muscle mass,you are putting on additional fat mass. It’s takes longer to put on muscle mass than fat mass. Muscle mass happens over time not immediately. So therefore you need to stay in a maintenance to aid in the support of mechanical tension and other metabolic activity. Surplus just makes you gain fat.

What exactly is being in a surplus going to do for me.. when I hear the word “maintenance” I think of it relative to body fat not muscle mass. If I eat an extra 500cals of chicken it’s not doing going to do any more for me in terms of muscle growth than eating 500cals of processed shit. You could argue if you do 500cals of just clean carbs it would help workout performance but It’s negligible if your carb intake is already solid.. especially with the bf increase.

Well depends who’s asking;if a person with high body fat asks, you can and should build muscle on maintenance, whether you’re fat or skinny fat. It’s not about building the most amount of muscle, its about being smart on how to change your body based on your own personal parameters. Building muscle while losing fat is better than building a lot of muscle and getting way fatter. Same applies for beginners in the gym and people who returned back to training after quite some time. Then after a lot of experience in the gym, and once you’re lean, then yes, surplus is the way.

if mechanical tension is the primary driver for muscle growth, additional carbs for a greater stimulus, sufficient protein to support growth and sufficient fats to support hormonal function. This can be done at maintenance

i’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, and realizing that I am not eating enough and as rich piano says you wanna get bigger eat more. But I find I eat quite a bit of protein. I don’t eat much sugar, would it be worth looking into bulking powders, or some other sort of weight gaining methods?
