The Problem With Coming Together I hear people say, “Remember when we could each express our opinions and still walk away friends”? I’m not sure that’s true. Many who are more conservative, living in more liberal areas, didn’t share their entire opinion, knowing the culture around them would not accept their ideas. I’m guessing the same is true for more liberal folks living in conservative areas. There were many final straws. The two that come to mind for me are the way COVID was shoved down our throats and the use of lawfare to attack political opponents. The trigger doesn’t matter; what matters is that we are at a standstill in terms of seeing each other’s point of view. In a podcast the other day, I got the chance to hear an interesting conversation between a very left-wing journalist and one on the right. I highly recommend you listen because I think getting to the place they talk about is ideal. https://open.spotify.com/episode/6I7KdefmaL0xNmig5FxR2H?si=qDnNA1LjTPKGH3-t6KI2fA However, in my mind, we are still quite a ways from being at a point of agreement. When culture makes you submit, finding your voice and seeing change is far too important to go backwards. We have one group of people whose ideology ruled the country for decades and another that watched as freedom dwindled. The pendulum is swinging back to a more normal place. I, for one, am not willing to ease up just yet. I see too many positive changes. The warning would be to people who find themselves in a more conservative mindset. Remember how it felt to be dominated, bullied, and pushed into silence. You don’t want to do the same thing to those who think more liberally, but the line is fine, and crossing it will happen. The goal must always be the truth. As I educate myself more on world situations, I find my opinions more fluid than ever before. I ask myself questions, and I’m not afraid to change my mind, and have many times. Don’t allow those who oppose you or your beliefs to keep you from having tough conversations. Also, know who is willing to bend and who just wants to attack and not listen. Keep your pearls close and don’t feed them to those who are only there to convince you not to listen to them. Please, go listen to the podcast. I think it’s worth hearing.
