@abc4explore: @mikeosharktails Tragic to watch such a powerful, majestic, and ancient creature that I have spent so much time with in the water cut down and left to die for somebody’s amusement. This shark was caught and finned as a trophy. Not for money. Not for food. The people who did this live or vacation here in Florida, in one of the wealthiest parts of the United States. THIS IS NOT A FIN TRADE ISSUE. This is a trophy hunting issue. Shark fishing, regardless of how people try to justify it, is the recreational delight of torturing an animal for as long as it can withstand to fight. The “Thrill of the Fight” they call it. The shark is not thrilled. Great Hammerheads are a critically endangered species who migrates close to our coastline, and they cannot withstand the stress of being caught and exhausted on a line. The lactic acid builds up in their system and causes them to die within hours. They are powerful, but 9/10 hammerheads caught and released will die after. So even a fisherman who would never want to butcher a shark or needlessly kill itwill watch it limp away back into the waves after being caught and think “Im not doing anything wrong, the shark is free”. Later on it dies anyway. If that feels wrong, Its because it IS wrong. They are better alive. #sharks #conservation #bansharkfishing #florida #protectwildlife
