@markonthemoney: Ad - I genuinely didn't understand pension tax relief until I was well into my 30s. For years I just saw the number on my payslip and left it at that. Turns out a £100 contribution was only really costing me £80 as a basic rate taxpayer — and if I'd been paying higher rate tax, I may have been able to claim back more through my tax return. Nobody sat me down and explained that. I had to work it out myself. What bothers me now is how normal that is. People aren't lazy — they're just never shown how it works.
