I just checked with my AI about Japanese postal rates. Shipping about 20kg from Japan to the US costs around ¥51,000, which is about $320. However, if you're only sending less than 10 pounds of stuff, the price might be closer to what you mentioned

im so glad we did luggage forwarding n our hotels, made travelling between cities so easy. We also got a storage bag for 500yen from 3 coins for adittiibal baggage int he way home!

I used Yamato on my trip and they were very good, our luggage always arrived a day later so we just kept our essentials with us for the first night of the hotel
