I tell my students all the time that saying always in biology is just daring life to defy you.

I loved reading that paper! The sheer amount of central-dogma breaking discoveries lately is astounding. There is another great paper that describes DNA polymerases "doodling" when no template is around, which i think is also crazy. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-69915-x

honestly compared to crispr sequence arrays, repeating two nucleotides without a template just seems like fairly believable horrors well within my comprehension

The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology was indeed poorly named. Science is never dogmatic. Some people thought Crick was just being cute, but he admitted years later in his autobiography that he misunderstood the actual meaning of the word ‘dogma’.

unfortunately most people's science classes have left them with a mendelian understanding of genetics and a caricature understanding of chemical bonds. why it's still taught this way I don't know

I swear biology is turning into chemistry with all these exceptions to central themes and rules 😭 It is super interesting though

Doesn't actually surprise me. More than 20 years ago I took a class called Prokaryotic Diversity of Metabolism which was about all the crazy alternative ways bacteria have figured out how to live where they shouldn't be able to - radioactivity, pressure, temperature, air, carbon sources, etc. are all USUALLY constraints for cells doing metabolism, but under enormous selective pressure, alternatives have emerged. This is kind of like that in that we USUALLY do DNA to RNA to protein, but under certain conditions there must've been a lucky accident that was adaptive, and here we are.
