Most people walk past this building without knowing what they’re looking at. Villa Bianca was built in 1964 the year Tokyo hosted the Olympics by developer Kanzo Ishida and architect Eiji Hotta. Ishida had one vision: an apartment complex built around the idea that people should want to stay, not just pass through. The two travelled to Europe and America looking for a reference point, found nothing that matched what they had in mind, and built something completely new from scratch. Hotta designed around an irregular site using a precise 3.5m grid every wall, every room, every structural detail aligned to it. The result is a staggered façade of stacked cube-like forms, each unit with its own balcony and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, creating the feeling of a private home inside a city building. 45 units total. Featured in LIFE Magazine on completion. Described at the time as “world-class.” Tokyo in 1964 was rebuilding itself with ambition. Villa Bianca was part of that moment and 60 years later, in a city that rarely keeps anything this old, it’s still here.
