i’ve been going to the same gyn since i was around 13 (heavy periods, pcos, the works) and i didn’t have my first pap smear until i was 21. she knew about my history and made it so comfortable for me. i will ONLY go to female gyn’s

I genuinely cannot mentally do it. I’m going to ask my victims advocate if there are other options because I truly am just terrified, I won’t be insensitive and say “I’d rather get cancer” because of course not, that’s disrespectful, and of course not. I just don’t know what to do. How did you get through it flashback/memory wise? I just feel like I’d genuinely lash out.

idk if this is helpful for anyone but you can also get pap smears from nurse midwives! i've always had pretty bad experiences with regular gynos (they were kaiser though (kaiser doctors arent known for good bedside manner LMAO)) but i've never had a bad experience with a nurse midwife. dont be afraid to be picky with who you choose and dont be afraid to be assertive! and if you feel like something is sketch, you can always leave and/or revoke your consent ❤️

My first Pap smear was fine. She was super gentle and used lots of lube. Overall had a very kind energy and I felt safe. Very relaxed. I think finding the right doctor is crucial. Finding one that genuinely cares about your comfort

I still haven't gotten one as a 22 year old, and I'm kind of terrified. I'll have to look into a gynecologist around me to try to look into it and schedule an appointment.

tbh the swab for me just kinda felt like using a tampon when your period is light. it just made me feel kinda dry/weird

Thank you for influencing! My first pap appointment went fine too! It’s uncomfy. But it’s necessary…

thank you for speaking on this. a pap smear is going to be an uncomfortable and/or painful procedure but some things are necessary for our health. one day of discomfort is better than months of suffering and possible death from cancer. cervical cancer often doesn't show symptoms in the early stages which is why a pap smear is so important

It's something that you need to get. I've been getting it done since I was 16. I'm 35 now. It's a very tingly uncomfortable feeling. It's a small scrape. It will be okay

Man I haven't been able to get mine done for the past 3 years of apts and I refuse to go to pelvic floor therapy. 💀 At this rate I'm about to ask my doctor if I can just do it myself.

Good job prioritizing your health! Thank you for sharing your experience and hopefully helping other folks with a cervix be more aware and informed. You're awesome!

I have never gotten one but I have gotten multiple internal ultrasounds. This may sound stupid but should I still get a pap smear?

Thank you for your reassurance. I'm 19, turning 20 this year. I don't have the experience you and many and the others in the comments have, my fear comes from just the fear of anything going in there. I'm a trans man, nothing has gone in there, and though I don't experience much bottom dysphoria I worry that it might trigger it? It also just makes me feel nauseous to think about anything going in there. Part of me wonders if I should just try something within my own home first to know what that may feel like to somewhat prepare myself for what to expect.
