@philosophyminis: Moral relativism is the idea that right and wrong depend upon who I am and where I live. So if one culture says it is okay for a man to have lots of wives, that is fine. It is just our culture does things differently. But according to the philosopher James Rachels, this will almost always involve a self-contradiction. Moral relativism involves two claims. The first says that moral values depend upon culture. So, my upbringing and my childhood and my society will tell me what is right or wrong. And so, second, we have no right to tell other people how they ought to behave. If one culture thinks it is okay to have child labour, then that is up to them. We do not do it, but we do a lot of things differently. Rachels argues that the moment you push back upon this, it falls apart, because is it okay, then, to stone an adulterer to a slow, painful, and humiliating death? Is it okay to torture an innocent person for the joy and pleasure of a coliseum full of cheering people? The moral relativist has to say that those things are wrong according to me, but on what grounds can they then say we should stop what they are doing? We should tell them to change their values. One way out seems to be a kind of moral imperialism, and this is where we say that ethics is relative, but we will still impose our values upon you anyway, in a kind of might equals right. But most moral relativists do not like this idea. So are ethics relative, or is there some absolute moral code? And if so, where does it come from? How do we know it, and should we impose that code on other people who are not obeying it?

an absolute moral code should be based on pain mitigation.

It’s pretty simple. Fundamentally speaking, morals exist to promote individual wellbeing and social cohesion. The best moral values are the ones that successfully achieve this. Sometimes they will vary by society (due to differences in the mutual expectations people have of one another), and sometimes they won’t (because innate human nature is largely consistent across all societies). It’s a bit of both, not one or the other.

moral code could easily be defined by principles determined by HUMANS (not any higher being) through lessons learnt from our history and continuous learning experience in the future. The past is a trial for a better future. These principles must all positively result in the wellbeing and harmony amongst living beings (ranging from the environment to the animal kingdom).

Of course morals are relative, they change through time and place. Doesn’t mean we can’t recommend behaviors, we can convince or impose values we think are important enough

I don’t think moral relativism says “people can do whatever they want”. Just because morality is subjective doesn’t mean laws don’t have to exist🧐

We shouldn’t impose anything on anyone. Everyone is responsible for theirselves alone! Everyone is free to choose his path. If my values don’t suit the society I live among I should leave this country. Also, we should talk and teach what we believe is right. And again the receiver has the right to choose what we stand for or not. 🤷🏻♀️

I think the most disruptive way to reframe the conversation is to treat morality not as a set of "truths" to be discovered, but as a coordination technology… a biological and social "operating system" designed to solve specific problems.

Moral relative ism only works in situations where a person is not harmed by another’s actions. Once that threshold is breached then moral relative ism falls down and cannot be used as a yard stick.

I believe the moral code is simply empathy as in seeing something happen to another person and imagining yourself as that person and thinking if you would like and enjoy whatever it is they are going through and if the answer is no then you should strive to reduce the harm done to another since you would want someone to do the same to you. But that’s just what I believe

you're confusing morals with ethics. Ethics is the one dependent on the society. For example a society of doctors would think it is ethical to keep a patient's illness a secret, while a society of judges would not. Morals is 100% based on the individuals. It can get confusing when a handful of people agree on the same values, but when you are against the opinion of the entire world, that is your morality speaking for sure. It's your inner sense of justice, and there are as many justice as there are people.
