I had mine write a script and a hook that tracks the tokens, and once it hits 180k it triggers, it watches til claude is finished with its output then changes the auto compact down to 1 token, so the next message I send it spawns my precompact which is a lightweight vault memory back up of the convo, runs compact, then the post compact hook moves the compaction watcher back from 1 token to 197k. That way, 95% of the time, auto compact waits until Claude is actually done with its operation instead of interrupting mid change before compacting, and it has memory to reference if it needs more context that it may have lost.
