@drbullockderm: 🖤 Giant birthmarks can be more than skin deep… As a dermatologist, I wanted to break down the risks associated with giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN)—large pigmented birthmarks present at birth. These lesions can be associated with an increased risk of: ⚠️ Melanoma — the lifetime risk is higher than average, especially in larger lesions and often during early childhood. 🧠 Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) — a rare condition where melanocytes are found in the brain and spinal cord, which can sometimes lead to neurologic symptoms. Risk tends to be higher when there are: ▪️ multiple satellite nevi ▪️ larger lesion size ▪️ lesions over the spine or scalp This is why early evaluation by a dermatologist—and sometimes MRI imaging in infancy—is important in select cases. While these diagnoses can sound scary, many children with giant congenital nevi do very well with proper monitoring and care. ❤️ Save & share this to spread awareness.
