Shrewbury, Wells, Glastonbury, Bath, Salisbury, Winchester. All moderately close to each other in terms of train travel and have different vibes. You can do a circle of them and still be reasonably close to Heathrow/Gatwick by the end of it, and you might have time to hop more eastwards

Well I would say Wells. It’s the U.K’s smallest city. As a history buff you’ll be interested in its 13th century palace with a genuine moat and drawbridge. Also Wells cathedral is 12th century with amazing architecture. The palace is home of the Bishop of Bath and Wells too with 14 acres of gardens. Also as I live in Bath it’s very close to Bath which is always worth a visit for some of the best Georgian architecture in the World and a World heritage site with its famous abbey and Roman baths. Just a few miles down the road is Glastonbury Tor which is famous for Arthurian legend and supposedly the site of mythical Avalon…there’s sooooo much history in the area it’s amazing,

I would do Rye. The Mermaid is a lovely pub, round the corner from Lamb House (look at the list of authors that have passed through). There's train connections to Lewes (which has a castle, is the birthplace of Tom Payne, has a home that 1 of Henry 8th's wives lived at), Hastings (1066 and all that, plus the following people lived here for a time: Alister Crowley, Grey Owl, John Logie Baird, Alan Turing, Queen Victoria - also haunted Old Town with a history of smuggling), Pevensey (castle), Maidstone/Dover/Canterbury (via changing at Ashford), Brighton (George 4th's party town), Battle (the abbey that's the site of the Norman conquest), Bexhill (home of the Sackville family that owned Delaware state and linked to Spike Milligan - as is Rye). By bus you can get to Hawkhurst (home of the 18th century Hawkhurst Gang [smugglers, pirates, brigands, ganster-af]), Hurstmonceux and Sodium (both have lovely castles), Burwash (home of Rudyard Kipling).

Winchester and Wells for Medieval, but if you can visit Bath (regency) it’s one of our best cities.

Oxford native here, I would stay south if you only have a week. Instead, I would recommend Warwick, and the Cotswolds!

Can you just take a month and rent a car and drive around, fastest way to disillusion yourself and then build up again your enthusiasm for the country. You clearly need time here, say it's for work 😉

I don’t have an opinion but Bury is not far from Ely too, if you’re into cathedrals. And fyi it’s pronounced berry not burry

Wells is the best area along side the Cathedral you have Bath, with the Roman Baths, and Glastonbury, the whole area is Beautiful, as for the rest mehh ,

I know it’s not on the list but Chester has the lot. That to one side, Wells is pretty. Once you get past all the tourist shops at the bottom, Cheddar Gorge is worth seeing but you’ll need to find something else to do for the other 23 and a half hours that day.

Rye...then you have camber sands for a beach if you fancy it but also train to Dover castle. Canterbury cathedral. Hever Castle.

Bury is lovely, but it’s a bit of a jaunt from where you’re going to be, and it’s pretty small! I’d choose Rye or Shrewsbury personally.

@malcolmvernone: @malcolmvernone: Without a doubt, Wells!!! If you’ve seen the British comedy film Hot Fuzz, this city was the film set!! The cathedral is awesome and thy have one of the best small town markets on Wednesday and Saturdays. Also you are really close to Cheddar Gorge, and Wookey Hole caves where th original cheddar cheese comes from!!
