Growing up my dad would say “back when you were just a gleam in my eye” about things that happened before we were born, and once when I was a toddler and he was talking about him and my mum meeting I asked if that was when I was in mum’s tummy. He said no it was before and I went “Ohhh, was I in your eye still?”

My son said he loved me so I asked him what he thought that meant. He said well I hug you and kiss you and tell you I love you and I said okay well what does that mean to you? My kid asked me the most heart wrenching question, I tried to give a thoughtful and age appropriate response, and she immediately hit me with “which do you like better: pink or purple?” Not a thought behind those eyes

When my daughter was three, she was watching Blues Clues. Told her she would need to pick up her toys and put them away before dinner. Her response, “I will as soon as my story is over”. Realized she had picked that up from her Grandma and her soap operas being called her stories.
